About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Senior Gardener to join a dedicated landscape management team responsible for maintaining prestigious gardens and green spaces across central London. This role is ideal for a skilled horticultural professional with strong plant knowledge, leadership abilities, and a commitment to sustainable gardening practices.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining exceptional garden standards while supporting team development, supervising horticultural operations, and contributing to landscaping projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and deputise for the Team Leader when required.
  • Provide horticultural expertise, guidance, and mentoring to gardeners and apprentices.
  • Carry out a wide range of gardening and landscape maintenance duties.
  • Supervise and motivate team members to achieve high-quality results.
  • Ensure gardens and landscaped areas are maintained to an exceptional standard.
  • Assist with the planning, design, and implementation of planting and landscaping projects.
  • Monitor and enforce health and safety procedures across all work activities.
  • Coordinate and oversee external contractors, suppliers, and specialist service providers.
  • Deliver horticultural advice and occasional guided garden tours for stakeholders and visitors.
  • Promote environmentally responsible gardening practices and biodiversity initiatives.
  • Ensure team members receive appropriate training and remain informed of relevant legislation and industry best practices.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience working within public gardens, parks, estates, or large-scale landscaped environments.
  • Strong supervisory or team leadership experience within horticulture.
  • Extensive practical knowledge of plants, planting schemes, and garden maintenance.
  • Experience managing biodiverse and sustainable landscapes.
  • Knowledge of aquatic planting and water feature maintenance is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to manage workloads, projects, and team performance effectively.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Amenity Horticulture or an equivalent qualification.
  • Strong plant identification and horticultural knowledge.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • PA1 and PA6 Spraying Certificates are advantageous but not essential.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Understanding of biodiversity conservation and sustainable horticultural practices.
  • Awareness of climate change impacts and environmentally responsible garden management.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation relevant to horticultural operations.
